Photos of Naturist Legacy's early success
35. Work begins on Naturist Legacy Park's new sun deck
One large late-season project still loomed before us — Naturist Legacy
Park's new sun deck! It would be immense, measuring 12 feet wide by 60
feet long. Construction began in late September. My first task was to trim
the existing splash deck to accommodate the footprint of the new sun deck.
We then spent many hours spacing and leveling the concrete blocks upon
which the sun deck would ultimately rest. As with other such building projects,
getting the foundation just right was crucial. Various members helped me
with assembling the beams and creating the framework that would support
the deck. It fell to my wife and I to add the actual decking. Our routine
would be the same over the course of several days. We would rise early,
have breakfast and then buy as many 12-foot-long deck boards as our little
truck could carry. I always hand picked the clearest and straightest boards
that I could find, which sometimes necessitated visiting more than one
retailer. After hauling our heavy load to the park from
Winnipeg,
we would begin the task of carefully spacing and then attaching the deck
boards with screws — nearly two thousand of them in all!
